Most Leaders Are Coaching and Developing People The Wrong Way… Coaching is a Learned Skill
ABOUT THIS TALK
This talk is all about learning how to coach your people to develop their professional capabilities – including the coaching of their people – toward enabling them to climb the ranks and not want to leave once they feel they’ve hit a growth ceiling. Matt explains how to begin developing a coaching strategy based on his “lift from where you stand” principle. He discusses the importance of consistent coaching, evolving team development, and proving your own commitment to shared goals as a means to getting team buy-in.
Matt offers entertaining anecdotes and elaborations on failure in coaching conversations (hint: when you tell people what to do instead of listening). He talks about how to set coaching goals that are achievable to build employees vs unachievable goals that break people and kill cultures.
Matt also looks at how to build rock stars – those magical people in management or leadership positions who are performing well, have been with you for years, believe in your values, are part of your brand and who show up day in and day out because they love what they do. Not stopping there, Matt shows you how to identify and build the superstars – those who are advancing quickly and want to move up through the business.
